Hilhi Spartan men’s and women’s swim teams competed in their first home meet of the 2018-19 season Tuesday afternoon against the Wilsonville Wildcats. The men’s team notched a 96-73 victory, while the women fell 101-69.
Both squads, however, saw some fast swims and top finishes.
On the women’s side, senior captain Rena French continued her success in the 50-yard freestyle with a dominant first-place finish, and dabbled in the 100-yard backstroke for the first time in her career, also winning the event well ahead of all competition. Her sister, junior Maya French, continued her season’s success by lowering her personal best time by ten seconds in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing second, and was also part of the top finishing 200-yard freestyle relay, along with Rena French, and sophomores Arwen Nielsen and Kennedy Godfrey.
Nielsen and senior Shawna Ashley Ingram ran a veritable gauntlet of tough events, both swimming butterfly on the 200-yard medley relay, followed shortly by the always grueling 200-IM, and only minutes afterwards, took on the equally challenging 100-yard butterfly, scoring critical points for the Spartans.
The Spartan men won all but three events at the meet, and were led by senior captain Nathan Claxton, who dominated the 100-yard butterfly and backstroke events. Junior Jack Schaber took first in the 200-IM and 500-free, and sophomore Spencer McLin won both of his races, the 200-free and 100-breast. They were joined by senior Jacob Godfrey on the 200-medley relay, and senior Trevor Griffin on the 400-free relay, both of which claimed the top spot.
Spartan swimming returns home one more time next Tuesday, January 29, at the Shute Park Aquatic Center, before setting its sights on the end-season District and State championship meets the following two weekends.
