Tuesday afternoon, Hilhi Spartan swimmers took on Parkrose in their final dual meet of the winter season before heading into the District and State championships.
The men’s team, despite heroic efforts on the part of all athletes, fell 88-82, while the women dominated the Broncos 125-35.
Highlights on the men’s side include swims from senior men’s captain Nathan Claxton, who continued his run of dual meet success with wins in the 100-butterfly and 100-backstroke, and fellow Spartans Jack Schaber and Spencer McLin won the 500-freestyle and 200-IM and 100-breaststroke, respectively. Senior Trevor Griffin, coming off of some outstanding training, saw success in the 50- and 100-freestyle, continuing to drop time going into Districts.
The women’s team was led by senior captain Rena French, who won the 50-freestyle and 100-backstroke, sophomores Arwen Nielsen, the victor in the 200-IM, and Elena Kitchens who, despite losing her cap and goggles in the 200-free, came home with a victory. Senior Miranda Dickinson notched her first victory in a varsity event, the always-grueling 500-freestyle. Junior Maya French took on the 100-butterfly for the first time, and swam her usual 100-breaststroke, winning both.
After the meet, the graduating seniors were honored for their dedication to Hilhi and the sport of swimming:
Shawna Ashley Ingram
Gabriela Reynoso Tale
The Spartan swimmers return to action next weekend, February 8-9, the NWOC District Championships, at Parkrose High School.
